Drool, indeed! My contract with Verizon is done next month, and we're looking to switch. We're looking at T-Mobile, but are also considering Cingular. I wonder if Apple is considering releasing a T-Mobile iPhone.
does t-mobile use gsm? i have a feeling that part of logic behind the partnership with cingular is that it still uses sim card technology ... which would make the iphone very attractive in europe and asia. those clever apple people. and seriously, the cingular head honchos must have made sweet sweet love to steve jobs.
Yep, T-Mo does use GSM. I've noticed that Cingular has the coolest phones, and always seems to get them before any of the other carriers. I bet it's because they're the largest carrier and therefore have a certain amount of influence with manufacturers. By making phones exclusive to Cingular for a certain amount of time (yeah, I think it's contractual), the manufacturers have the largest initial customer base, while Cingular enjoys the appeal of always being the first carrier with the new toys.
Normally, that would appeal to me as an early adopter, but I've read that Cingular's call quality can leave something to be desired (Consumer Reports). T-Mobile, on the other hand, is just about even with Verizon, and (from my personal experience) is better in terms of customer service.
Also, Cingular will be rebranding itself as AT&T Wireless starting later this year. That shouldn't bother me, but there's something decidedly unappealing about carrying around a phone that says "Cingular" when that's not in fact the name of your carrier. Nitpicky, I know.

It does seem a bit spendy, though...
